After telling the Colossians to make “the peace of Christ” the ruler of their hearts, he now tells them to make “the Word of Christ” dwell in them in a way that is abundant and pours over into others. Paul describes how this happens in two ways: first in teaching others with the Word of God, and second in displaying thankfulness through singing songs and hymns. Watch along to find out more about how this impacts the Christian life.

As violence continues in the Middle East, many wonder what impact the world’s events have on what Scripture teaches about Israel. Paul makes an overarching statement in Colossians 3:14 after explaining what kinds of behavior Christians are to “put on” as ones who have set their mind on things above. Paul says that, like an overcoat, love should be draped over all other actions that Christians put on for the sake of pleasing God, uniting with others, and maturing in the faith.

Paul focuses on the positive in vs. 13 of Colossians 3 by explaining to the Colossians how they can put on “compassionate hearts” as he described in vs. 12. Namely, by bearing with others and by forgiving others. All of this is possible because of the forgiveness received by Christ. Thus, forgiving others is the means by which Christians actively embody the Gospel in their lives.

Paul previously taught the Colossians to “put off” sin in their walk with the Lord. Now, Paul tells them to not only put off their old self but to by faith put on their new self—a new self that is being continually renewed into the image of Christ.

Paul continues to give practicals of how Christians can walk in a manner worthy of the Lord by living with a Heavenly perspective. In vs. 5-6 Paul told Christians to execute the desires of their flesh by faith. In vs. 7-8 he now tells them by faith to “put off” sin from themselves like one puts off a garment. Find out what it means to put off sin and why it matters.

As Paul describes in Colossians 3 what it looks like to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, he tells Christians in light of their heavenly perspective to put to death their flesh while still dwelling on Earth, especially in matters of lust and greed.
